It was very interesting to hear from my friend how he made human grade dog food, he has a pitbull, the dog is allergic to corns, most dog food contains corns, he really loves his dog, he did some research on Internet, starts making dog food himself, he bought most ingredients from Smart and Final store, potatoes, brown rice, chickens, broccoli, tomato, etc, he put the chicken bones into oven, baked it till it can be grinded, he grinds the chicken bones into powders, and mix it into dog food, I asked him if he can tell his dog like the food made for her, he said his dog would come back couple times to finish the dog food he got from stores, but his dog always finishes all the food he made in the bowl at one time, and licks the empty bowl couple of times, he calls the dog food he made - human grade dog food, his dog seems agree : )

Over the years, I have struggled with the concept of “having a pet.” I have listened to some more extreme animal rights activists tell me that keeping a pet is similar to slavery. What right is it of humans to oppress these other beings for our own amusement? I realize that the proper term is “guardian” or “companian” and not owner when referring to the relationship with a pet.
However, recently, I took in a cat that I very much care about. I have known this cat since it was a kitten. But, only after 8 years, did I find myself taking care of it. I’ve always felt a connection with this cat. And, I can honestly say that I feel a friendship with her. That “friendship” makes me question relationships in general.
She has some challenges. I’ve been trying to gain her trust and determine the extent of her mental and physical issues. She seems to have many issues that could be easily fixed if she was a person. But, she is not a person, she is a cat. I know that sometimes I look at her and think to myself, “What kind of life is it to lay around the house sleeping, playing, getting food, exploring. Doesn’t she get bored and wish for more?” I realize, though, that she’s a cat. And, when I look at someone and think, “How can they be happy just doing such and such profession?” I realize that just as I can’t fully understand another person, it is even more difficult to fully understand another species. It’s made especially difficult by the language barrier. I can only deduce so much from “Meow, meow, meow.”
As my cat ages, it gets even more difficult. She is extremely affected by any trips out of the house. She seems traumatized by medication. Where do I draw the line in trying to make her life “better.” She has a condition which, according to online research, will require several doctors visits, several diagnostics tests, possible lifelong traumatic treatment, with possibly no benefits realized.
Some consults have guilted me by stating that I choose not to do the procedure because “it’s just a cat” and that I value money over the suffering of the animal. However, if one turns the tables and requests that they do the procedures for free, they seem to value money even more than I do. That tactic sickens me becuase, as I’ve stated previously, to me she is not “just a cat.” She is a friend – a dear friend. Thus, I try to ask what I would want in that situation. However, again, I am not a cat. And, I am not in that situation….yet.
Some have likened it to dealing with a child and that the parent should know what’s best for their child. However, it differs in at least three ways. First, I’ve seen many instances when the instincts of an animal are far superior to what a human “thought was best.” Second, a child will hopefully grow to be able to communicate and realize that the parent had the best interests of the child in mind. This is not always realized with an animal. And third, a parent has some memory of what it was like to be a child. I have no memory of what I wish would have been done when I was a cat. Not to mention average life expectancy, utilitarian efficiencies and religious views of cats versus humans.
Anyway, I guess the best I can do is to try my best. I’ll try to treat her with respect and love. I guess that’s what I hope for in most of my relationships. But, again, I am not a cat.
