Remove redirect virus

May. 22. 2009 by lawnz –  Category: ComputerInternet (1 Comment)

My Windows XP computer was infected with browser redirect virus recently, the symptom is any links on Google search result page are redirected to random sites, I tried anti-virus software Microsoft malicious software removal tool and Symantec anti-virus software, they did not work, Symantec software has nice gui, uses tons of system  resources, I went to cnet.com, users rated it one and half star only, that is fair.

here is the procedure works for me to remove the browser redirect virus,

  1. Follow Microsoft procedure article 962007 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007
  2. Download free software SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes
  3. Install above software and download latest known virus data
  4. Reboot system, during booting hit F8 key to boot to safe mode, or use SuperAntiSpyware tool to boot to safe mode
  5. Run SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes in the order to remove virus
  6. if needed, repeat 4 and 5 till no virus found
